Hi there I have chopped up my sweet potatoes..
stuck me cocktail sticks in them.. to suspend half in half oot water in warm place..
in a couple of weeks i should have some slips to grow them from which i have to root...

Anyone else tried them before?
How long should they take to fruit..

ive never grown them but ave read they like warmth, maybe a bit early??

in house on top o radiator to get them growing
think be 6-7 weeks before rooted
then in greenhouse for 3-4 to grow to decent size.. end of march..
frame 2 weeks mid april, which last year was our summer!!

Might give that a go - I love sweet potatoes but they are actually much higher in calories than ordinary ones

Dizzy, is it necessary to cut them and put them on sticks? Having read your first post, I rushed out and bought some Covington variety. I have them uncut in tubs with water half-way up the tuber. Wouldn't this amount to the same thing?

Has anyone got a link to sound advise in these creatures? I have space in the polytunnel but am not sure about whether to manure/use black plastic/seaweed etc.

I bought slips last year as I fancied having a harvest of Sweet Potato, the slips go in quite late and they dont harvest till November, not sure if the weather was the main factor but the harvest was disappointing, small fruits quite knobbly and difficult to peel, had a couple of boilings though. Would be very interested to hear how you get on with this idea

I have tried putting 4 sweet potatoes in glasses of water about about a third full, 4 weeks ago, one has rotted but the other 3 have started to root. I have now put them in the greenhouse. Hopefully they will be ok and they might leaf up. I have never done this before. Any tips I bought them from the supermarket.

I would like to grow them but I've been told that the West Midlands is too far north.  I don't have a polytunnel, only a small greenhouse which will be taken up with tomoatoes so would have to grow outside.  Anyone in this area or further north had any success?

My one surviving shoot was potted up and planted in the polytunnel a couple of weeks ago.
 It's just sitting there deliberately not growing and smirking me.
