We have a beautiful Scots Grey cockerel for sale for £10. Unfortunately he is related to our hens. We are in Aberdeenshire.

Our holding has Anglo Nubian and British Toggenburg goats, Gotland sheep, Franconian Geese, Blue Swedish ducks, a whole load of mongrel hens and two semi-feral children.

Shame you are so far away as I would happily do you a swap.  Unless you happen to be coming down to the central belt soon?   :chook:  Where did your flock come from originally?

A swap would be ideal. Unfortunately I'm not going anywhere much at the moment as the new baby doesn't like the car.

Hmm I wonder if I can persuade the inlaws next time they head up from Dumfriess

Every breed of poultry has been developed by breeding closely related stock wisely. The best pullets are bred to their sire, and the best young stags are mated to their mother and her sisters. That's how a strain is made and maintained.

Ideally, the breeder runs two families of related fowl and, when an outcross is required to keep vigour in the individuals, a suitable bird can be used from the other family.

If you have a good strain of a breed, doing all they should in terms of laying/table worthiness/conformation and type, you shouldn't risk it all going pear-shaped by bringing in un-related stock for breeding purposes.
