Willow craft - hedgerow baskets
« on: November 18, 2011, 06:38:26 pm »
I was at the Falkland Centre for Stewardship hedgerow basket workshop today 10-4 and tho I struggled a bit to start with I have a few new creations to share with you ;)

Full day cost £15 including materials and cups of tea but not lunch - great value I thought, so if they run any more I'll definitely try and attend :)

Like that trivet!  Are they going on your website to sell?  Now you've reminded me I'm off to look at the Falkland website to see if there's anything I fancy doing.

They're really good. I did a willow workshop at Centre Parcs a few years ago - I made an obelisk thing for the garden. I was rather proud of it as I'm not "crafty". Eventually it disintegrated but it was good while it lasted.

I always meant to make more - it wasn't difficult but I never followed up sourcing willow.

These kind of courses are really good - give you positive vibes, I think.

http://centreforstewardship.org.uk/events.htm

Keep an eye on the above as they should be announcing the spring programme soon.  Hedgerow basketry is the one I did but while there were biscuits I have to say there was no cake and none of the biccies were gluten free so I had my peanuts and raisins :(

It's worth putting your name on the waiting list for new events if you're interested as they already put on second and third versions of some of these more popular ones and occasionally someone drops out so you might be lucky with 1 December if you're known to be waiting.

The "trivet" is in fact a willow tension basket - or more accurately a shallow dish which I reckon may be a fruit dish or something.  I have been offered some willow to have another go at home but I need to see what it is and then whether I can use it, not to mention remember how the things were made ;)  I won't sell this one as it's my only evidence of having done it and would be useful to remind myself if I do try again.  Once I get going tho, I had in mind a willow basket with a felt liner and some plum jam and plum chutney or something as a gift set ;D  Or an egg basket..  a log basket would be good eventually :o

My apologies - it looked flatter on the screen, should've gone to ..................  ;) ;D

Did I give you some willow sticks to plant or do you have some growing?  I got mine from Happy Hippy (Karen)  and I am due to see here soon (when this little pig has gone to market   ;D ) so I'm sure she could bring some more with her and I could get them to you.  Stick em in the ground and you'll have enough willow to make a thousand baskets next year!  Honestly they grow THAT quick!

Beautiful!  Got me all excited - it is that wonderful time of the year when uncut hedgerows start to reveal their potential - Ive spotted a great stretch of willow and some lovely red stuff (dogwood?)...

No I didn't get any bits to plant and would love some Annie.

Dogwood is red so could have been what you spotted FiB, there were a few pieces yesterday that the instructor had spotted and nabbed from a hedge but they were picked up before I got to them ::)  Mine were mixed brown, yellow and green willow..

I've got dogwood but you need rooted bits for that to grow don't you?  Karen is coming here next Saturday so might give me some for you as she has loads more than me, failing that I'll cut some of mine
