British Lop Boar needed to hire for our girls - Devon
« on: October 20, 2011, 12:36:43 pm »
Our two lovely registered girls are looking for love.  Elsie and Guinevere are January 2011 maiden gilts, and we'd like to get them in pig in December.  They are of the General and Harmony Lines so we're looking at getting a boar of Prince, Cornishman, or Duke, etc lines.  We'd like to get a proven, but young boar in as this is their first time.

If anyone can help, let me know.  I promise he will be pampered and left to do what he does best.

Have you thought about getting them Artificially inseminated?....if you dont get the boar that you want.  The vert might do it for a fee...some thing to consider.

I have thought about AI, but from other people's experience, i have gathered that pigs need the real deal - soft lights, music, a nice dinner and a bit of a cuddle!  I am tempted to say, don't we all... ;)

They can either visit or be visited, but I'd like them to have the best possible chance of conception.

Yes I would agree with that but sometimes that is not always possible.

I breed Pedigree British Lops and as far as I am aware there is no AI available at the moment, it is something they are working on in Northern Ireland so hopefully soon.  I have a boar that accepts visitors but think it might be too far for you to travel to Shropshire!

Hmm... Yes.  I was thinking of keeping it to Devon/Dorset/Somerset/Cornwall.  Shropshire is rather a long way, especially as they've only travelled 40 minutes before!

The British Lop Society's website is having a peculiar day today.  I can't get any information at all from it.  Most queer.

i know you are wanting pedigree      but have you considered covering them with a Hampshire you will get fantastic pigs that combine the best of both   and you can get semen for AI :farmer:

For their first time, I had wanted to keep them pedigree as there is such a good market for the weaners (and the meat is out of this world).  I have been offered a rather wonderful Large Black Boar called Boris, but he's for sale rather than for hire.

You'd get a beautiful "blue" pig if you crossed them, I should think.

no mostly white with some black on the face hams to die for when they are filling out and pricked up ears you would not regret it :farmer:

I was thinking more of the Large Black crossed with the Lop for the blue pig, actually!

I will bear it in mind, but I'd love to keep 'em all Lops for this year.  Hampshires are gorgeous, don't get me wrong.  Really beautiful pigs.  Daren't show pictures to my husband.  He'd have every breed going!

Luxton Rare Breeds in Winkleigh have a Lop Boar. I have some of their pigs atm and they are fab

They are worth a try, you might have to send your girls to the boar.

I would strongly recommend them
