The cat, a chick, and me ......
« on: September 13, 2011, 11:37:47 am »
Was just having a drink of coffee in my little shed before deciding which job to start first, when they was an almghty screeching.  Sounded like a chick.  Quite often they get a leg stuck in the mesh of the pen when scratching.  Rushed out to see the "partial to chicks" tom cat running up the field clutching a half grown chick in his mouth.

OMG ...threw my cup down, and gave chase.  Cat realised I was behind him, went through the gate on to the lane. I climbed the gate to save opening and closing it (sheep, goats and llama in field!)  Up the lane we went, chick yelling for all its worth.  Into neighbours big garden.  No time for knocking on doors to ask permission to run round their wilderness of a garden!  The advantage  I had as the cat went among all the shrubs and bushes, was that the chick was still making a racket so I knew where he had gone - and I knew it was still alive.  Through the undergrowth twice, across the lawn, on to the wall that adjoins our field, he ran up there, and then stopped to turn across the lawn again.  I grabbed him and held on for dear life.  Not sure if you have ever tried to extract a chicken from a vice like jaw of a cat, but they sure do grip tight.  Forced his jaw open and snatched the chicken.

Phew ....that was a near shave.  Had the cat gone in next doors field, the chick would be a gonner as thats a big field.

Looking at the pen, the chicks have scratched round the side, and made a hole big enough to get out of.  Blocked it off with big stones as a temporary measure.

Thank goodness I was not at work.

You must be fit! I'd be gasping for breath after all that. Well done on getting the chick back, and Tom Cat would be lucky not to get the toe of your boot if he is moochin about again. I do like cats  :cat: but not when they are stealing my birds.
Hope wee chick is okay.

; ;) Its surprising how fast you can run, when you have to!!  Although I think I am pretty fit - but I shall not be doing the local fell race on Saturday!!

I was worried the chick would die of shock, but I checked it over and popped it back with the others, and its fine.

I can laugh now, but it was not funny at the time .....wonder what my neighbours thought to see the spectacle in their garden.  There again, they are used to the funny goings on from our fields, so probably did not think anything of it!!
