They Met office say the winds were around 70mph+ here over night...our very own little 'Irene'. Coupled with the torrential rain, we have flooded sheds, the cabbage patch is a mini pond, the turkey's fence is snapped clean in half and the poor little terrier was actually blown over on his way to his morning ablutions! On a good note, the polytunnel is still standing  and they say the winds are easing off today

Glad you survived the tail-end of the hurricane, Skirza.     Nothing to report here apart from almost constant rain all day yesterday, the type that really wets you very very quickly - got absolutely soaked through every layer doing morning rounds.  Loads of us were caught out with grass on the ground, so a good stiff breeze to help dry it out now would be just dandy!  (But not so stiff it lifts it right up and plonks it over the hedge into next door's field...!)

Poor you, Skirza - poor wee dog, too. Looks like the States' eastern seaboard is getting it pretty bad.

It's overcast and windy here - no rain yet. Hopefully the washing will be dry before it comes! t was nice here yesterday - worked hard, so stove on today and feet up. Maybe.

Interesting to hear that Irene 'hit' at home too. I'm currently staying with smallholding friends in Virginia! What an experience, though fortunately it wasn't as bad as forecast by the time it hit here

When we watch the forecast & they tell us it will be a wee bit breezy with us we usually laugh and say - so it'll be at least gale force then - !

I think the mets  definition is definitely based on what you're used to, depending on where you live.
I have assumed that people must get fed up & phone in saying so - we base so much of our activity on the wind & rain - especially in fishing & agricultural area's - though I can usually smell & see it coming it's nice to be reassured a little bit more in advance.
I suppose in this day & age they could be sued........................

But would be really interested to know if it is based on viewers responses if anyone does know for sure

Batten down the hatches here comes winter, blowing a gale with horiziontal rain this morning, all pigs had breakfast in bed only the poor daft keeper out in all weather gear(why is when you get it all on you suddenly need a wee or is that just me? ) . I read somewhere we can expect a squally wet autumn followed by an early winter with snow in November. Oh joy! Back in the dry now at work, dog positively refused to go to his kennel this morning so left him snoring on the settee. Even the calves were cosied up in the hedge back sheltering. Yuk.

why is when you get it all on you suddenly need a wee or is that just me?

No, not just you.  I always have a wee whether I think I need one or not before I go out for that very reason.  Then when I think I need a wee (which still happens!) I can sternly tell myself not to be silly, I've just had one!  

It's the same thing with rubbing-in pastry or kneading dough - as soon as your hands are floury your nose starts to run!

Its really not fair!  I was on nights all last week and weekend so missed the lovely warm days we had, now I have a week off its rubbish  

The poor chickens are all under the bushes (why they dont go in the shed I havent got a clue) the goats are sulking in their shed, the cats and dogs are all snuggled up together in heaps of fur and the geese and ducks are the only ones looking like they dont care!

I intend doing inside jobs till the wind eases off a bit - or maybe just vegging on sofa in front of fire

Pretty windy this morning in the fens too - my runner beans are now practically horizontal! I was out this morning storing away the parasol, bbq and hammock - summer is over definitely autumnal now. Which reminds to give the chimney sweep a call...

Hi all,
     Was a bit windy through the night, but is now warm and toasty up here in Aberdeen, not sure how long it will last though.
     I'm stuck at work inside all day can't even enjoy the bit of sun while it lasts

Up in the high hills of Derbyshire, we are used to high winds, and horizontal rain - but being in a caravan, you do notice when its particularly bad. Last night the wind really got up, and torrential rain too.  Just got a good soaking feeding all the livestock this morning, and although the winds dropped a bit,. the heavy showers continue.  Not good for outside work today.

We had rain and wind overnight. It's blowy now but dry and sunny. Don't know how long it will last though - this wind could blow in any kind of weather.

Well what a different day today, a glorious morning, watched the sun come up this morning and it was a pleasure to be out and about, piggies & calves much happier gruffling in the grass.
It like the local news man said "if you don't like the weather at the moment wait ten minutes and it'll change" very appropiate at the moment. Showers forecast for later with strengthening wind.

Nearly lost our 18 foot yurt last night and the night before - hope it calms down cos I need to take it down.

I cant take it down in the wind or I'll be done for launching a para-glider off agri land

The goats must have had a rough night after their pig ark has moved 20 foot and turned round - more blocks attached to ropes today me thinks
