Is it just me?
« on: August 25, 2011, 01:09:47 am »
Is it just me or does anyone else think this a bit cheeky?  I've a couple of ads with photos for my Wyandotte bantams (6 cockerels, 4 pullets) got my first enquiry the other day. After a brief discussion & me saying I was going to keep at least one pullet she said she'd take the other 3."They'll be going in an Eglu & will look quite nice & someone might buy them" Turns out she has "a small poultry business" . I didn't sell them to her. They are happy free ranging in my garden where they do look nice. If anyone wants to buy them they can buy them from me, for themselves, but I'm just as happy keeping them.

Hmmmm, yes I think that's a bit cheeky too  :-\
And like you I probably wouldn't have sold them to a life of confinment when they've been used to the great outdoors  ;)

well, that's the free market for you. At least she had the courtesy to tell you, so you could decline. How many times do we have no idea what happens to our animals once they leave our safe haven? :&>

I would not like that either, especially as my hens all free range.  But, once we sell livestock or anything for that matter, its out of our hands what then happens.

I advertised some kittens last year - £20 each.  Lovely white one among them, and a lady and little girl came.  Ooh, yes, child loved kitten, they would take it.  Came to paying, and mother said she had spent £10 on fuel getting here, so only had £10.  Seeing as I may have been left with the kitten, I took the tenner, and anyway, could not say no and end up with a tearful child, could I?!!

Two weeks later, there was my kitten back on the internet for ....yep,  £20.  I did not phone her, because I was so angry, and may have regretted my outburst.   What was worse, it said, wormed, deflead, etc ....yes, it was, because I had told her I had done it, so she did not have the outlay for that, did she!!!

I'm gobsmacked. Obviously a crying child bothers you more than her.  :o

I would be a bit miffed too but as has been said if they pay the money they can do what they want afterwards.
After all farm animals are business for most people, myself included, and I wouldn't want to be told what I could or couldn't do with them. If it were any other farm animal it would be taken for granted that the purchaser would be trying to make money out of the deal.

I totally agree that once you sell anything it's up to the buyer what they do. Just feel it would have been more courteous to say at the beginning, but it just sort of slipped out. And of course to me they are not livestock, just my wee chooks! And they've got names  ::)

well, from now on you will probably ask folk if they are gong to keep them themselves. I also try to deliver any birds I move on, just to see where they are going. The thing is that some people locally reply to unwanted cockerel ads and they end up in the pot. When one poor previous owner found out she nearly fainted as he was supposed to move to a new home!
How did the lady from Dairsie react when you didn't want to sell? :chook: :&>

I often reply to ads. for unwanted cockerels but always say that they're for the freezer. Most people don't mind, just want rid of them but I would never pretend they were for pets.

Well I said"So you're going to sell them on?" She said "Yes, aren't you happy about that" I said "No" & that was it really, just said goodbye & hung up. She wasn't unpleasant at all.
IF cockerels become a problem with crowing/ fighting I wouldn't mind someone having them for the pot, just couldn't do it myself. A couple of them lok as if they are going to be quite handsome boys so I'd like to keep them. I just didn't like the idea of someone buying them to make a profit & me not knowing what had happened to them, if they got good homes etc.
How do you highlight a bit of a post to quote ???
