More going to slaughter
« on: August 10, 2011, 10:32:11 pm »
We tagged (purple spray) 4 of the biggest ones in our herd today to go to slaughter on Monday.  Got a lady coming to see some of the smaller ones tomorrow to see if she wants to bring some on for meat and if she doesn't then i can see us adding a few more of the smaller ones in the trailer too.  Having to seriously cut down on them now as we've got the piglets now and will either have to sell them off or bring them on for meat.

Winter is around the corner and we want as few as possible over that time.  I've booked in 6 at the slaughter house but i can always chance that  :pig:

I know it's £20 a pig minimum to kill and cut but thats fine with me :) I've offered my mother some at slaughter price only to get shot of some of the meat lol and we're hoping to get some tidy meat off the bigger ones.  Getting them into the stock trailer will be fun hehe watch hubby get dragged around the field hehe

I hope it works out for you. The problem with pigs is that there is always the temptation to take on more than you can cope with. I think I probably mentioned this many months ago (if not to you, then to others in a similar situation - it's a scenario that comes round time and time again). Hope you get back what you paid for/have put into them.

Also, re "tagging" with purple spray - that's not sufficient. They need to be metal tagged or slap-marked with your herd number. A temporary (i.e. spray paint mark) can only be used between the holding of birth and the next holding when the pigs are under 12 months old.

Any queries, please drop me a message or ring me on 07846 449023. Happy to help if I can.
All the best
Liz

The reason we've done it today is to make them stand out to make it easier to catch and pin point the little sods :) plus a lady is coming to look at some of the younger ones and the purple sprayed ones are not available.  We've taken some to slaughter before and have the pressed metal ear tags that our slaughter house will take.

Thank you :) i didn't explain myself very well lol not been the best of days today  >:(

Even though we've always known deep down that our son will never be able to hold a driving licence (he has a condition called Septo Optic Displaysia, nystagmus and a few other problems) it was confirmed yesterday by his eye specialist.  Yes we've known, but always held hope, being told still smarted a bit lol

Thanks guys  :bouquet:

Had a lady come to view the pigs today and she is coming back next week to take 4 females.  1 of them is the original sow i had as she is a proven breeder (and my boar has covered her a few times recently), 1 gilt that i am 80% sure she is in pig and 2 smaller gilts.  We're taking a few to slaughter on Monday all depending if i can get my hands on a stock trailer.

We've cutting down loads now ready for winter and if we decide to keep some more then we've always got the piglets hehe
