Pigs eating free range meat! :-\
« on: June 29, 2011, 10:56:12 am »
 Morning

I went to feed my pigs this morning, and one was running about insanely, being chased by three others.I called them up for brekky, and they came, but I noticed this on had something in it's mouth.!

Upon getting closer I though,OMG it's a pigeon!! I went over and then found the remains of feathers, the pig dropped it by the side of it's feeding bay and I nipped around and disposed of what was left,a tail and two legs! :o I did not actually realise that this occurred, anyone else had this experience.

The pigs are healthy, lord they run around like my Labrador wanting to play, they seem to love it when I go in and jump about in their wallow and see it as some form of game  ;D

They are omnivores!  All those slugs and snails they eat are still meat.  I do wonder if they would go for the chickens if really hungry - or me, if I got stuck in the mud!!

Yes it can happen. Not the first time I've read of this sort of incident.

Hi,

They WILL eat anything .... Just make sure you never knock yourself out in a pig pen .... or you will become a tasty meal .... :bunny:

My mum bought me a trio of beautiful buff orpingtons many years ago. They happily pecked around the yard with my other chickens until one day when they discovered the pig pen. The last I saw of them was a waft of pale brown feathers and the pigs had an evil smirk on their little porky faces. As a side note, the pigs would kill the rats that we were inundated with but they never ate them. ;)

A rabbit wouldn't have stood a chance with my Berkshires :o Have never seen the Kunes' chase and eat a rabbit though. Do you think it fair to insist that an omnivore  become vegan?

May not be fair, but it protects against spread of disease - Gone are the days when we scraped our school dinner plates into a big plastic bin destined for the pig farm..... Yikes - just shown my age  :bunny:
