Swollen bladder/penis area on young boar
« on: June 06, 2011, 06:25:11 pm »
One of the four GOS wieners I picked up recently has a pronounced swelling around his willy! It is not hot or warm, it is fairly soft to the touch (The things we have to do!!!) and does not appear to cause any discomfort. He appears quite happy, curly tail and eats....well...like a pig! I have been abroad for 4 days and it seems to have grown quite a bit over that period and it is now the size of a large avocado.........Any ideas? :pig:

Hernia was my first thought too.
If it's not causing him pain/discomfort and you're planning on slaughter at around 6 months just keep an eye on it. Providing it's not strangulated or causes a twist in the gut it really shouldn't affect things. But I would talk to the breeder who you got him from, they may not be aware, and from my point of view as a breeder I'd want to know if one of my pigs developed something like that. Of course, it may be that they are aware of it, but I would have thought they'd have at least mentioned it  :-\
I have a young Kune Kune boar at present who has a scrotial hernia (KK's are really prone to them) as he's grown so has the hernia. But (without sounding hard hearted) he's destined for pork so I see no need to do anything about it. Obviously if he ever seems pained or troubled by it we'll get him to the vet asap.

Thanks Karen, yes, as they have a limited destiny, I would rather not call out the vet when the piggy is the happiest of the lot! If he ends up in any distress I will of course call the vet immediately.

I have it confirmed that my GOS boar has an umbilical hernia. It is the size of a large avocado and causes him no stress. Do the more experienced on this forum think I should ignore it....he is now around 12 weeks and is going at 5-6 months.....

Personally i would just keep an eye on him, so long as he is comfortable and doing well he should be fine until slaughter.

As long as it's not causing him any discomfort, it should be fine. But, as someone said earlier, do let the breeder know. I'd want to know if it had happened to one I had sold.
