Hen Balooned?
« on: May 31, 2011, 01:54:00 pm »
I have noticed that over the past couple of weeks that one of my old girls has become a lot less active and in less of a hurry to eat. As she was not showing any signs of disconfort i left her in the hope she was having a down spell and would perk up.
Today she seems worse than have ever seen a chook before, she is very Bloated around her back passage, and it feels like a fluid, it's not solid, and i can't feel anything that may indicate an egg being stuck (also i do not think she has been laying since the snows lifted) she seems to be in pain to move therefore has not left the dust bath very much at all. her crop feels normal, perhaps a little empty.

I am not one for letting a bird suffer so if this is not curable, or sounds detrimental i will sendher to the hen house in the sky  :'( how ever bad that makes me sound

Oh Dear Cameron, that does sound like what my Chicken Korma had (apart from she didn't seem pained) she was definately swollen and walked like John Wayne towards the end.
It doesn't make you sound bad to send her to the hen house in the sky if thats what needs to be. I've never been in a position where I've had to and I dread the day, I admire those who do end the suffering of their birds. good luck with your girl x

sadly things deteriorated faster than i thought after my initial posting, so to save her any more stress and disconfort she had to be PTS about an hour ago  :'(  :'(
