Bl@@dy fox
« on: May 17, 2011, 05:18:41 pm »
A fox came and decimated all our hens this afternoon  >:( >:(
They were all up and about enjoying life at 4pm, then went out to feed and shut them in the run for the night at 4.45 to find 5 bodies scattered about the place. Nothing eaten, just all killed, in 5 different places.
Really gutted  :( :(

Fox goes into a frenzy - kills all he can grab. Not nice, and I feel for you.

Everyone should be aware that fox will strike at any time of day, all but one of my losses have been during the day.

Be extra vigilant, he will be back, as that is where he found his easy pickings.

Best wishes.

in the HERALD today there is an article on the golfer that clubbed the fox when it was attacking his tunnocks caramel wafer they had photos of his wafer in court fined £750 and his club was deemed an offencive weapon and destroyed
its a funny old word it would be free board and lodgings for me the amount of rats i have shot drowned flattened ran over clubbed and any other means at my disposal

Sorry to hear about your chickens.  :'(  It's a horrible feeling you get when confronted by the carnage.

Sorry to hear about the fox attack. We have been here a year in July and not seem any foxes until today. Large dog fox being chased by our 2 Burmese cats! My concern if for the chickens that our landshare lady has down in our small paddock, they have wire all around the runs and seem secure but...

Thats awful - its devastating when this happens.  Young foxes will be going out on their own now, and they are around during the daytime.  Brave little things, and will come in the field even if you are there.  Before we had the llama, a young fox came and helped itself to one of our large laying hens.  Fully feathered, it was too heavy for the little fox, and after much yelling and chasing, it dropped the hen - no damage just traumatsed.  Although it did come back and take another, and this time got away with it.  That was horrible, as the hen was still alive.

The other evening about 6pm I saw a fox cross the bypass in the village - obviously heading out to look for food.  My hens are out until 9pm and refuse to go in any earlier.

they are so bolshy as well! the other day I caught a dog fox in the garden part of our land (where the swings and slide are) it looked at me and cocked its leg up my roses. by the time hubby was there with his rifle, it had gone - lasting image of mr plums doing a wee to cover its scent while still holding his gun  ;D
sorry to hear about your hens. it has happened to many of us and is horrid when it does.
this particular fox somehow walked past at least 4 of my soppy hens that had climbed over the electric fence to 'free range' so we were lucky.

Very sorry to hear your news, Sudanpan.  It's horrible.  Doesn't get any easier, either.  I'm feeling for you.

Thanks for the words of solace  :)
The fox did come back, presumably to pick up some of the carnage but he was disappointed because we had already gathered up all the bodies. We did try and get our 2 (dopey) dogs to do their thing but quite frankly they were flipping useless!
The fox was really mangy looking - pretty much bare backend and no fur on his tail so obviously not in good shape.
We are going to replace the hens but are doing a bit more fox proofing of the run etc. :) :)

sorry for the loss of your hens. Yesterday I let my lot out just before 8am. The chickens stay around the barn first thing in the morning but the ducks like to wander down the field. When I went out again at 10am my Indian Runner Drake was gone. Just so mad. :o

sorry to hear this, it's horrid!!!

so frustrating, all the care and attention put into a flock of hens for this to happen to them
you may light another's candle from your own without loss
