FOR SALE: Soays - Scot Borders
« on: May 12, 2011, 02:08:48 pm »
Hi, we have 8 native rare breed Soay ewes who have had 12 stunning little lambs between them (5male/7female) - all arrived with the greatest of ease but we now have 20 mouths feeding on our limited resources and will need to offload by September this year.  These are beautiful sheep and will hand feed from a bucket.  They are self shearing (doing that just now) and are deemed, 'easy-care' stock (no tale docking / lamb without help etc, completely self sufficient).  We give them a few handfuls of food each day and they have never tried to escape.  They make a lovely flock but we will have to sell some.  They are not registered with the RBST but are pure in that they came from a large flock on a friend's estate who have been keeping rare breeds for generations - long before the RBST ever existed.  We're about 30mins south of Edinburgh (nr Lauder if you're looking on a map).  We haven't castrated any of the males (we did manage to pen all mums and lambs but they're cheeky bits were just too small to get in the ring!) so we could offer unrelateds.  Anyone out there interested please get in touch - I've learned not to leave things to the last minute - we could put them to mart in September but I hate marts, way too stressful for such gentle creatures - and myself.  Thanks for reading. :)
registered soay, castlemilk moorit  and north ronaldsay sheep, pygmy goats, steinbacher geese, muscovy ducks, various hens, lots of visiting mallards, a naughty border collie, a puss and a couple of guinea pigs

Somebody on here was looking for Soays - hope they see this!

I'm not going to say anything about registration - it's all been said before by people a lot more knowledgeable than I.

Hi I,m looking for new male Soays for the ewes I have. I have 4 ewes who have all lambed and have 4 males that I realy need to find other homes for as dont want to breed with the same ewes again next year. Would you consider a swap for one or how much are you asking. Though at the mo I dont have any transport, and not sure if Edinburgh is a bit far for me to come. Let me know anyway.

Hi Marie, I need to offload so won't want a swap I'm afraid, the going rate last year was £25 per lamb so that would be fine - there's no great rush, the oldest boys are just starting to eat solids - have a think about it - they're small enough to fit two or three in the back of a car of course, you can get back to me.... :)
