I lost a very much loved and valued friend this morning.  She would have been 14 in 5 weeks time - a fair age for  a German Wire Haired Pointer, but too soon for me.

My friend, Pat, bred the litter and John had seen them as baby puppies on a few occasions while I was at work.  We left our Brittanys with Pat when we went on holiday and when we came back she asked if I'd like to see the two she had kept to run on.  So we went out to the kennel to find not two, but three, 4 month old pups.  John very quietly said 'I want one, you have to choose'  I told him it had to be a female and Pat said that was why she had kept two females and a male, she was keeping the male - he eventually became a Champion.  I chose Hester as John's combined Christmas and Birthday present, and she came home with us and 6 Brittanys.  She never left his side, except the day he went to Lochnagar because the whole of the Cairngorm Club were going on the bus instead of him using his car.  That was the day two young climbers went through a snow cornice, knocking it off the mountain and taking John down with it - 1000 feet.  He died 4 days later, part of me and Hester died too.  Hester refused to obey me or acknowledge me for 3 months, but at that point something changed -  she must have realised there was only me, and became MY constant companion.  That was 8 years ago.  Last week she had a minor stroke, causing neurological damage, but she improved over the week and we were having fun with slippers being stolen again, and there was yet another chicken taken ::)  (She didn't take prisoners did this German!)

Last night she started to cough, and lie down a lot, and her legs wouldn't support her.  This morning she was worse so I called Ian my vet and took her straight down.  She went to sleep very peacefully and flew over the Rainbow Bridge to greet her Daddy.  Goodbye my baby, I'll miss you so much. :'(
