Just as it said, Hello, not exactly a smallholder yet but was brought up on a dairy farm and work in the animal feed industry, hoping I will be able to help other people.

Hi. We're in Cornwall too, moved here in August and absolutely loving it. Just outside Constantine, with 13 acres (yes, we're very lucky). So far we only have chickens (and our wonderful Airedale Max, too). Have dug the veg patch, planted a dozen fruit trees and lots of raspberries and fruit bushes, and spending time clearing some of the land which was badly overgrown with brambles and bracken. We're going to take it slowly deciding what else to do with the land. We were told, when we bought, that the three big fields (about 9 acres total) were cut for hay in a contra deal with the agricultural contractor, but in fact the hay was just 'dumped' at the edge of the fields as 'too wet' this year, and have been told by others that there is just no demand for hay as there's so little stock around here now.Where in Cornwall are you? Don't seem to be many on this forum this far south!

Am hijacking a 'Hi from Cornwall' post to act as an introduction for us as well, as we are just in the process of moving lock stock and barrel to 'the central peninsula' (between Camborne and Helston)

We bought a 4 acre holding with a tumbledown cottage in the southeast corner - and have spent the last 20 months having 'fun and games' $:-\$ with the planners for our rebuild of the cottage - finally we have got approval but OMG what a complete nightmare dealing with them. Fortunately we could actually get on with doing something constructive because we did get planning approval to erect a barn on the agricultural land so have been kept busy digging foundations, laying pipes and putting up the steel frame and cladding the whole thing - we are pretty much doing everything ourselves with the help of our CASE tractor 'Terry' and 1.5 tonne JCB digger 'Dave' - yeah sad I know but hey what the heck

Anyhoo we are moving down in July - we have a comfortable static caravan on site from which we will be organising the build of the cottage. For the rest of the smallholding we intend to graze some sheep for meat, fatten a couple of pigs each year, have some chooks running around (hopefully they will learn pretty quickly to avoid the resident hungry buzzzards) - that's the plan anyway! We have been reading the forum avidly and see that there are a load of very helpful users who seem to find the time to answer/help with even the most basic of questions - no doubt we will be posting those types of questions so apologies in advance

Hi to you both from a blustery Normandy! I used to live in Helston many years ago - I was in the Navy at the Air Station at Culdrose. God those were the days. My favourite place to go to blow away the cobwebs was down at Portleven, no too far from Helston - the breakers there used to be spectacular.
