Imposter
« on: April 27, 2011, 03:04:11 pm »
This appeared in one of my seedling pots (forget which now).

It looked interesting so I potted it on to see what it would do.

Any ideas?

I appreciate it is still fairly "unformed" to my untrained eye

Hi  it's a cucurbit of some kind, probably a squash or pumpkin, not a cucumber but maybe a courgette - time will tell  ;D

Mmmm - wonder where that came from!!!

We didn't have any cucurbits growing last year although last week I did put some corgette and butternut seeds in to germinate as they came with a magazine... but that was way after this one popped up. ???

Ah well - mine is not to reason why.javascript:void(0);

Here it is and will have a chance at life :-)

Thanks Fleecewidfe - you are alsways first to identify my plants  :bouquet:

We lost a couple of "last chance" tomato plants to frost the other day so there will be room in the last chance saloon for the cucurbits  :D

It does seem odd that a cucurbit grew unexpectedly as the seeds are hard to miss  ;D
A few years back I noticed a small plant in my polytunnel which I certainly hadn't sown and had no idea what it was.  Being curious I let it grow...and grow....and grow...eventually it produced white trumpet flowers and some funny looking spiky fruits, identifying itself as Datura or Thorn Apple - highly poisonous.  It had a horrible smell but I let it grow on and on just to see what happened.  Several more had appeared but I pulled those out.  By the time it was about 8 feet tall I decided enough was enough - and I certainly didn't want it seeding itself.  I looked inside the spiky fruits and found that the seed was indistinguishable from pepper and chilli seeds, but as I sow all things like that indoors in pots it wasn't that it had come in a seed packet.  It was suggested that birds might have brought it - but where from?  I can't imagine anyone within flying distance of where I live keeping such an exotic plant, and there has never been a seed like that in the bird seed we put out for the birds.  It has never come back - which I'm pleased about as it was a bit like being taken over by a triffid  ;D

Perhaps you were eating a cucumber sandwich in the polytunnel?   ;D

With the crusts trimmed - of course  ;D ;D ;D

Talking of Triffids ...

There is a worrying amount of Japanese Knotweed starting to grow by the side of the road about half a mile from us - horrible stuff  :P there were areas inundated with it near where we used to live in Wales & the council used to poison it every year, looked awful, but it always came back  ???
It's about time someone found a way of doing away with this stuff - they'd make a fortune - any budding scientists out there?

thats a courgette!! tenner on it!!
the label on the pot behind says courgette so maybe its a mislabeled pot rather than a missplaced seed?

Ah no  ;) - those seeds (behind) were acquired and planted after the "imposter seed" reared its head.

We've never done any cucurbits becasue DH says he doesn't like them........ but he will  ;) ;)
