Photo competition in aid of New Zealand and Japan
« on: March 20, 2011, 10:49:17 pm »
Hi Folks, here we go with the photo competition: Schedule designed by Karen is attached showing all the information you need.  Print this off and keep it handy.

Dan has setup a JustGiving page for TAS and the photo comp, it's at:

http://www.justgiving.com/TheAccidentalSmallholder - the Just giving link for Japan is Shelterbox

Send a donation for Japan by setting up an account with Just Giving, using either a debit/credit card or a paypal account.

For New Zealand click on the link to the Christchurch appeal on the Just giving page on the right, under the gallery link. (NZ$ are approximately 50p, so if you donate NZ$10, that is about £5)  Credit/debit card can be used or an electronic transfer from your bank to theirs using the account details given on the Christchurch page.

You can post on Facebook and Twitter that you have donated in order to publicise the donation websites.

Let's say £1 per photo as a guide.  Photos will be judged on interest, composition, technique, and content, by Calum Morrell, who is a photographer, Rosemary Champion, who you all know for her vast knowledge on most species of flora and fauna, and one other who is also a smallholder with vast experience but who hasn't confirmed yet.  The gallery is almost ready to go, it's at:

http://www.accidentalsmallholder.net/forum/gallery/

The maximum photo size is 1280x1280 pixels, and 2 megabyte file size.

To add a photo:

1. Click on the Gallery Name you want to add to.

2. Click the 'Add a picture' link at the bottom of the gallery.

3. Fill in the form with at least a title and the photo file.

That's it.

Now read the schedule, then go and look for lots of good photos and get your entries in.

Good luck, everyone and let the best photo be displayed on the CSSA calendar 2011!

(ps I think everything is self explanatory, but feel free to PM me if you have any queries)

All systems go, folks, the Gallery is waiting - http://www.accidentalsmallholder.net/forum/gallery/

Get snapping, or send in photos you already have.  We want this to be a really special event.  The CSSA calendar is always popular, and these are both worthy causes.  If this is a success we will run it every year.

Some great entries comming through now, but we need more in "Show what you grow" (keep it clean people!) and "Flora and fauna" .. otherwise there's not going to be much judging involved for those categories!  :dunce:

Is there a deadline decided yet?
With my broadband connection, it may take a while to get pics uploaded!  And with the amount of time actually spent in the house, while the weather is so good ....
;D

Mid to end of June seems reasonable to allow people to get the shots they want in (hopefully) some decent weather.

I just received this message from my pal Chrissie in New Zealand.  You will all have heard that they have had more earthquakes - of the magnitude  5 + on the Richter scale.  Please use the photo competition as a means of helping both the new Zealanders and the Japanese in their hour of need

Quote
When I first started these posts, I thought back then that maybe the worst was over and we could look forward to some sort of recovery. Wrong.
Monday let rip with a double whammy and the city and its outer regions are all back to square one.
The CBD is again full of rubble - the Christchurch Cathedral famous Rose window that authorities were desperate to save has been shattered and it reflects how the residents of Christchurch are feeling.
The Eastern Suburbs have again, for the third and in some cases fourth time been innundated with liquefaction. We are all hurting real bad and trying very hard to dredge up the optimism and happy outlook we once had.
This time, Christchurch is on its knees.

From my own personal point of view I am worried. Recent statistics sent to us from EQC (the government insurance provider for earthquakes)BEFORE Monday's episode, indicate that it will be at least some two years before all insured properties are assessed - if they dont run out of funds beforehand.
(See my post on the old BCGB forum - International Section, for details).

Every day we are getting "aftershocks" and the toll on our house is starting to show the strain. It feels like it is being wrecked, in slow motion, infront of your eyes.
We are yet to see any insurance assessors - now some nine months after the initial massive 7.1 earthquake last September. The structural damage is taking its toll and what was supposed to be our dream home that we had saved and worked for, will now become our greatest nightmare.
We could be staring down the barrel of eventual financial ruin - not only personally, but as a city, a region and as a country.
If you think this sounds melodramatic, consider this......
NZ has only 4 million people - reducing daily as people evacuate Christchurch. The business community in Christchurch is shattered. Whole suburbs of the city are facing demolition and relocation somewhere else.Christchurch is the second biggest city in NZ and has a big influence on the economy of NZ. Without jobs and broken homes, many people will leave - who can blame them? Parents with stressed children are also at their wits end.Schools are closed, sports facilities are closed - some for years - the damage is that bad.

Where will all the money come from to repair and re-build to a "first world" status. Those of us with family commitments, jobs and property have to stay for the foreseeable future.

Worst of all, the earthquakes keep coming and there are forecasts of still more to come.

What would you do???
