Still waiting for kidding
« on: March 09, 2011, 10:47:10 pm »
Things are very tense as we are waiting for Charlie the pygmy to kid.  She was a first kidder last year, and although I watched her like a hawk, she still kidded when I was not there, and it was dead - so understandably, I am even keener this time.  To make matters worse, it looks like the first mating was not successful, and she caught on the second, so I feel like I have been on kid watch forever.  She is very large, but there again, pygmy goats are so small, they look big when it in kid.

Wish she would hurry up - have one lonesome kid with no playmates!!

Oh yes, something has happened.  A black kid, white star, and a white patch either side of its body, was waiting for us this morning.  Unfortunately, Charlie would not let it anywhere near to feed, and I spent the morning struggling to get her to accept it.  Hubby came home art lunchtime and between us we  managed to hold nanny still while kid fed, and again this evening.  Cannot leave kid in pen  with her, as she repeatedly butted it.  Trying to get it to have a bottle to help it along - poor little mite runs to its mum, and cannot understand why she ignores it.

Looks like I will be bottle feeding ......and its a billy :'(

Well, mother goat has decided being a mum is not for her.  We are having to tie her up, hold her against the wall, while the little one feeds - he is not backwards in coming forward, and as soon as we have the goat tied up, he is in there for his milk.  Have to remove him though, because as soon as she is untied, she butts him if he goes near her udder.  On the plus side, she is standing a lot better while he drinks, until he head butts her udder that is.  I am putting him to both sides as she has plenty of milk, and although I have tiny hands, a pygmy first kidder has diddy teats, and of course my discolated finger hurts so do not want to be milking at all if I can help it.

Have been struggling to get him to take his bottle, but have changed to a wine bottle and a pull on teat and he is much better.  Have him with me in the caravan - he has just had a feed .....hope he sleeps through now.  He woke me at 4am this morning.  Cat was not happy at the racket!!  Kid is supposed to be in the large cat carrier .....but he has somehow crept out, and is lying quite happily by the oil filled radiator!!!

;D Little Blue, Rick is quite taken with the little man - although tonight he was not over happy when a little goat hada wee on him.

My neighbour came round yesterday, had a photo taken with the goat kid, and sent it to everyone she knew it seems.  Came back today to take more pics  ......and asked if she could name him. She is Scottish, so chose the name Finlay - I think it suits him.

Lovely warm sunny afternoon, so Finlay had a little run round outside, chasing the kittens and jumping at the hens. He enjoyed himself, and is now tucked up in his cat carrier.  He will want his bottle soon I expect.  But last night he had his bottle at 11.30pm and I had to rouse him at 6am when I got up, for his morning bottle, so that was good.

Mollys kid who is 3 weeks old, went out today for the first time  - first decent day.  Went round the field like a whirlwind.  Went right up to Robbie the llama, he looked enormous at the side.

No pics, as camera lead has got mislaid when we moved.

I guess you'll have the tamest wee sole there, I loved bottle feeding lambs last year (not the early mornings and late nights must admit) but he will be such a character can't wait to see pics - have fun
