Chicken Feed
« on: February 24, 2011, 09:58:51 am »
OK - slightly worried now. I have been following a thread in the Coffee Lounge about feeding scraps to the animals -

What are we allowed / not allowed to feed the chickens. Mine get all the peelings, apple cores, half eaten sandwiches etc that kids leave, plus every so often they get left over dinners. AM I feeding them something wrong?  ???

I do sell some of their eggs to friend although we eat most of them. Worried I am poisoning people now  ??? :-\ :-[

MIne get veggie peelings although I cook potato peel for them, the rest they tend to have raw. they have their own shells cooked and fed back to them. they have cooked pasta, rice, sweetcorn, jacket potato skins, yorkshire puddings, porrige when its cold out adn when we have a milking nanny on site they get a bowl of goats milk too.
Of course they aren't supposed to have any of the above that has been prepared in a kitchen that also handles meat. we have very little meat as hubby is a vegemetarian and the children are funny about chewy meat (little toads) but hey ho. so yes, there is sometimes meat in my kitchen but the chickens don't eat it, ever.
DEFRA have a lot of info about what we shouldn't feed on their website. x

ok - that was interesting reading  :o

I didn't realise it was illegal with a risk of 2 years imprison if you fed them kitchen waste.  :o :o

LOL.  ;D

Mind you, I feed the kids from food I prepare in the kitchen. They are definitely little animals!
