Veg seed check
« on: February 22, 2011, 09:16:34 am »
OK I went through the tin and discovered the following:
Cauliflower (all year round)
Aubergene (Black Beauty)
Leaf Salad (Frilly mix)
2x Courgette (zucchini and all green bush varieties)
Celeriac (monarch) - half pack from last year
2x Kale (nero di toscana and dwarf green curled)
PSB (half pack from last year)
Parsnip (countess F1) half pack
1.5x Beetroot (boltardy half pack and Perfect 3 full pack)
2.5x Calabrese (half pack green sprouting AND 2 new packs autumn green)
Savoy (Traviata)
Perpetual spinach
Iceberg
Mangetout (half pack)
3 out of date half packs - rocket, chives and basil - to throw in somewhere to see!
And a few pinto beans from a packet 2 years old so last chance

Clearly I like broccoli and beetroot and have gone off green beans, given up on cucumber and peppers, butternut squash and carrots.. ::)

But I do still need to buy onion and shallot sets and leeks.

And want to have another go at peas, sweetcorn and celery which elude me

I don't really eat much cabbage but might have a go at red cabbage for pickling..

Any suggestions or other lists/plans?  Oh and Egglady and NorthFifeDuckling, this is what I've got and am happy to share..

My recommendation for a sugar snap pea is Delikett by Mr Fothergill
Also I would get Dwarf french bean Ferrari by Mr Fothergill, if you really don't like then don't bother but if you are swithering at all - try them ;)

I read recently that Parsnip seed must be fresh - so if you really want parsnip then I would replace them.
Potatoes aren't on your list!
I wouldn't bother with sweetcorn and celery still eludes me but I am still trying ;D

Ellie, what do you mean by given up on Cucumbers, squash, peppers and carrots? Do they not do well where you are (or no greenhouse)?
I haven't had the time to go through the water carnage packets, but parsnips and courgettes would be fab anyway if you have them spare. I always give older ones a go and sometimes even 5 year old carrot seeds still germinate!
i definitely won't be needing rocket as it grows like a weed in my garden. Thank heavens I like it!
Sweetcorn I will do again but probably not celery, did not do well.
will get back to you again, Ellie, thanks! :&>

I don't have a proper greenhouse only a plastic sheeted plastic frame job that is so lightweight it blows away ::) which is how all my brassica seed trays got upended and mixed last year and ended up randomly planted ::)

I got the sweetcorn to produce cobs last year, but they weren't ripe enough to eat and still white corn so I felt nearly there and worth another go but probably a waste of time and space I admit ::)

Potatoes and carrots are so cheap by the sack that I don't plant them as I have limited space.  I did grow potatoes one year in the front bed outside the kitchen but was pulling stragglers 5 years later ::) so will only throw any sprouted domestic ones into a tub and leave them to see ;)

Might try the dwarf french beans and sugarsnap peas for a change and will definitely get new parsnip seeds, thanks :) I usually grow runners and get overwhelmed by the amount of something for which I have limited use and taste ::)  I don't actually like broad beans so why I planted them last year I have no idea but I ended up giving a whole sack of pods away :o

Why is it I can grow best the things I either don't like or don't want that much of, but things I adore and could eat every day are eluding me ???

I don't think that's just you! Though I've stopped planting things I won't use that much of.
I know what you mean about potatoes and carrots, I don't grow onion for the same reason, but I do like some fresh new tatties straight out of the ground. And carrots? Well, I've got the seed so I might aswell! :D

I have lots of left over seeds as my imagination always outgrows my garden.....this year I hve sorted them out and thrown away most of the really old ones, the germination does fall off in older seeds but they are still worth trying.
last year my garden suffered more from lack of time than anything else.
I grow potatoes in buckets as my little garden doesn't really have room, also very easy to harvest as I just tip the bucket out into the wheelbarrow, pick out all the potatoes and tip the soil onto any available space it the veggy or flower beds.
last year I grew the most amazing cabages, I think I planted out eight and four grew. I loved eating the first one, lightly steamed and with butter. gave away the second one, eat the third and decided I was going off cabbage and gave the fourth one to Abbey :horse: who loved it.... she also likes sprouts, broccoli and turnip. I have too many leeks left but I don't think she would like them...
I know its easier to buy some things, and often cheaper too....at the moment the carrots are so cheap I feel sorry for the farmers... but even growing a small amount of something is a great satisfaction and they taste sooooo good its worth it. I think my carrot plot last year was about a 4ft square.
its taken a number of years to learn what I can grow and what I really like. how you end up with a perfect balance is something that eludes me completly.
