weaners wanted
« on: January 20, 2011, 06:14:57 pm »
I want 2 weaners around March time. I just raise them for the freezer for personal use. I also make bacon, sausages, hams etc as well with them. I have had cross Old Spot/Middle White before but don't think the person breeds them anymore so am looking around. I would like to try pure Old Spot but am open to what is available at the time. I don't want them registered as they will be slaughtered as soon as they are big enough. They will have a really good life here in Cheshire with only the very best diet and attention by family and friends. Can anyone nearby help?

Hi, we are in Shropshire and regularly have weaners available, mainly British Lop or Saddleback x GOS cross.  Are Lops are pedigree but sell weaners that don't fully meet standards as top quality fatteners, let me know if that is of any interest

Yes this is of interest to me. What do you recommend as a general alround smallholders pig. How long would it take for a British Lop to get to slaughter weight? I don't want anything slow growing. I want it to be in the freezer befor September!

Lillian has a Lop, she'll be able to tell you their up's and down's. I'm sure though that she said "if Berkshires are considered a ladies pig, then Lops would be a child's pig" - very placid in nature and friendly. ;D
They're also the rarest of the native rare breeds and give good pork (but exceptional bacon/cured meat apparently)
If you're getting weaners in March they should definately be ready for the freezer by September :yum:

Hello.  We have Gloucester Old Spot sows, including one that farrowed on New Year's Eve, so her five will be weaned mid to late February.  We usually hang onto them for another week or two to ensure all is well / feeding etc once apart from sow, which takes us to end Feb / early March.  If this would be of interest let me know.  All born and reared outside so extremely hardy.  Can deliver (for small extra charge!) so if you're interested let me know roughly where you are in Cheshire, and I can give you an idea of price.
