Had an accident
« on: January 12, 2011, 09:25:20 pm »
On my way home from work on Monday, on my bike.Hit a patch of black ice and fell off!  Picked myself up,seemed ok - until I looked at my hand ........my second finger was sitting at a very peculiar angle behind my ring finger.  No pain the finger was completely numb.  Neighbour came and took me to the cottage hospital.  Had an x ray, which showed finger not broken, just badly discolated.  I was not looking forward to the next bit, but the staff were very good.  Kept me talking about my animals, gave me a jab to freeze my finger, lots of gas and air - quick yank and finger back in place.

Only problem, fingers strapped up, hard to do much.  Obviously, difficult to deal with the animals using one hand - and indeed do anything.  Off to fracture clinic tomorrow so will see what they say.

Really fed up - worst of it is, I am left handed, and yes, thats the damaged fingers

Wow Roxy that sounds painful as well as being a real pita when it comes to getting anything done.

Hope it heals OK and you get back to normal as soon as possible.

Hope you're soon feeling better  :bouquet:

Does hurt though - I broke the middle finger of my left hand a few years ago. I was turning Smokey out and another horse lunged at him, causing him to pull away and the knot on the end of the lead rope jerked through my hand. Like you, it was numb, so I went after Smokey, took off his headcollar and looked at my finger. It was at a funny angle from the end joint. I thought I had dislocated it, so (I can't believe I did this) I straightened it up, even though it crunched a bit. By the time I got home, it was really sore (tears and snotters) so Dan took me to A&E. It was broken but the nurse said I'd done a good job of setting it, so she just taped it up. A year or so later, I broke the ring finger on my left hand, a doctor set it and made a right a*se of it and the finger's twisted and hurts when it rains. But at least it was my left hand both times and I'm right handed.

You'll feel such a fraud at the fracture clinic if it's full of folk in huge stookies and you're there with a broken finger.  ;D

Ooh, Rosemary, I have gone shivery thinking of you repairing your finger yourself!  mine came away at the knuckle joint.  Nurse said she sees a lot, suppose sports injuries, but admitted mine was a bad one.  Do hope it gets right quick - everything is taking twice as long.

Hi Russ,

Black ice, nasty stuff. Have you ' got back on your bike straight away ' as my Dad used to tell me directly after a bike accident ?

My dad is recovering from a similar injury and the worst of it is that he is a dedicated musician so the loss of use of one finger depressed him a lot at first. Then he got philosophical and started to work out ways to play using his other fingers to compensate. Five months later and with a lot of positive thinking he now tells me that he is a better musician than he was before because he has been forced to find ways around notes he could not make.  Hope this little positive tale helps a bit. You will mend, keep on top of the negative thoughts. Best wishes. XXX

Had to go to the big hospital yesterday .......they tutted a bit about what my local little hospital had done, and taped injured finger to my index finger instead - which now makes holding a pen impossible.  Got to start bending my finger now to stop it stiffening, and go back to the fracture clinic in two weeks.  There were lots of old ladies with black eyes and broken arms at the clinic - must have all taken a tumble on the ice!
