I like Red, simple soul that I am.  Love Phoenix as a name but not for a working collie, too long ;)

How about:
Gyp for a handsome wee rogue,
Twist since you didn't want to stick with what you have,
Mac for a good sire,
Taz if he's a wee red devil,
Depp if he's handsome ;)

how would you spell it? i only spell it like this as its how i found it in a book i have!..would be glad of a correction please???. ;)
thank you for the breeding lectures aswell everyone,i have 5 dogs in total myself and this will be no.6..i am not a breeder churning out pups left right and centre but the one litter of X-BRED collies i have had were all sold to friends, family and the odd well checked home..nearly all as working dogs as they were collie x/lurcher types......i will have him vet checked in all ways before even considering breeding with him aswell...but may i say this post was from me,a 28yr old women who's had an absolute crap 2010 who was just excited about her new puppy!!!!!!does everything have to get a negative comment these days????i am well aware of the rescue centres as the company i work for deals with council stray dog collections! i have 3 rescues myself! if i choose to breed from him it will only be one or two litters over the years and this is my choice in life.

thank you for all the names everyone but i dont think i'll bother with the dog section of the forum anymore...it seems you mention the word puppy and all hell brakes loose!sad really as this WAS the best thing to happen in my life for a while and i just wanted to share it... :( :( :(

Sorry, I didn't mean to rain on your parade  :( Phoenix is the correct spelling, as I was taught. Nice name for a horse, but of a mouthful for a collie though - by the time you've shouted it, he's have rounded up all the sheep in the park  ;D

I've just got a thing about "collie" names - part of the OCD  ;D

I truly wish you joy with your new boy - maybe we're all a wee bit jealous and broody  :bouquet:

And my apologies too - as a responsible pedigree breeder and qualified Judge of some years standing with the Scottish and British Kennel Clubs, I am programmed to come down hard on indiscriminate breeding whether of pedigree dogs whether for profit or on a whim, or of mongrels - incidentally, a cross breed is a mating between two different breeds, a mongrel is a mating between a cross breed and any other dog.  And I just have a bee in my bonnet about all the lovely dogs that are put to sleep because they have been bred with no pre-ordered loving home to look after them.  I have only bred when I have at least three or four homes committed to buying a pup from me.

So I am really sorry I have upset you, my professional side takes over sometimes and perhaps I need to keep it in check.   I wish you lots of luck and heaps of fun with your new acquisition, and hope you'll stay on this section.

How about Max. I have a beautiful blue merle collie and that is his name and he is as bright as a button even though he is nearly blind, probably caused by people breeding for profit.
He is now 10 and I have had him since he was 6 weeks old and I am sure he won't mind his name being used by another merle abeit red.

hi
we spent an age picking names for our lot (we have 10 now), they all know their names but we also have other names for them. fun name and they all know them as well,
it must sound really odd at races when my wife shouts the dogs in over the finish line, 3 dogs in the team and four or five names used.

From the International Sheepdog Society
"The Society permits the use of only one, simple working name for a registered dog.  Working on the fields, perhaps with more than one dog, a shepherd will be able to cope with names such as "Ben", "Meg", "Cap" or "Moss".  But imagine trying to work with "Philip", "Flossie","Pretty Boy", etc.

We are quite happy to accept non-English language names.  The test is that the names should, ideally, be single-syllable."

how about PIG?   lol

My friends got a new puppy on Valentines Day and they called him Valentino but shorten it to Valley. Which i think is nice.

He does look lovely. I do agree with you, collie's are the best breed of dogs. Liver and white's are my favourites. Don't think I've ever seen a red merle though. Can we have pictures when he arrives please?

Breeder's will breed dogs- mongrel or otherwise, if people continue to buy them. When the market dries up, they will stop. I have friends who breed mongrels and pure breeds- they wouldn't do it if they couldn't sell them. So perhaps it's the people who buy those puppies we should be campaigning against. We would normally take a litter or two from our own bitches during their life.

Max, my blue Merle collie, we rescued from a rescue centre as the breeders left him there as he could not be sold for profit. He is as good as blind having only a small eye on the left and the sight as good as nothing in the other. That doesn't stop him from leading a normal life. He go's for walks in the forests around here, but is not keen of walking in town as there is a bit more going on there. I don't regret the decision of re homing him as he is literally one of a kind.

On a brighter note, let's have some pic's when you finally bring him home what ever you call him.
