Feather question?
« on: December 12, 2010, 12:48:09 pm »
Hi all,

one of my white birds is currently growing new feathers after a moult and has a large black feather developing at the back of her head which wasnt there before. My question is, do replacement feathers sometimes grow back with different colours or feather patterns or will the feather all ways grow back the same. I have a suspicion that the breeder may have trimmed the feather off to make the hen appear pure white when she wasnt. I had intended to breed from her but I may have to change my mind.

Any thoughts?

I've notice a slight variation in colours post moult - but I've so far only seen the Warrens (ISA Brown hybrids) moult as the others are too young.

smart thinking princesspiggy.... (though abit naughty!)

I did not notice colour changes on the chooks after a moult (only the first feathers are usually darker than the first fluff) , but the ducks always get a considerably darker new coat. I think this is due to the sun bleaching them but from black to white is a bit unusual . The only small dark patches on our white hen turned out to be mud...we thought for a while she would turn out speckled  ;D ;D ;D  :chook: :&>
