£40 ea !  Is that all they go for ?  (I don't do sheep, as you will know [member=24672]harmony[/member] - I was just surprised at how little money they can go for.)

When setting the price for stock for sale the vendor will be thinking of what price the meat would sell for after costs.  What is left over is the asking price, for wethers at least, remembering that with Hebs, if they are lambs (the OP doesn't say) then they would have to be further fattened for perhaps another year to be ready for slaughter.  Good breeding stock will fetch much higher prices, but I too am saddened at how little our primitives sell for.

I was at Skipton on Sept 11th, surprised at how little they went for, but only small sheep.

They may only be small but they are extremely milky and will easily rear to a commercial tup two good lambs ready for the autumn sales. Pure hebs when finished wont have the carcase of a commercial but they aren't all heavy bone either. They are tasty though. There are been some very good prices at the breed sales. They are hardy, lamb well, don't knock you over and don't need feeding hard.
