Now we have finally sold up, we are travelling to the Republic on the 19th.  We look at the big websites like Daft.ie, but not everyone posts on these sites.  Does anyone know of less well known places to look?  Covid has made our long made plans much more difficult as property with land is now much more desirable.  We've been outbid twice on properties that weren't even being auctioned.  It's a bit scary as we've been smallholders for 16 years and this has been planned long before Covid...

The best place we know of is Feakle, County Clare. Talk to Garry and Margaret Pepper of the famous Peppers Bar. They will know everything and if they don't will ask Karen and Pat Breen. They will know of any properties for sale, or coming up for sale. Tell them Chris and Rosie sent you.


Strange thing is a third of the inhabitants in Clare are English and they never mix???

We have been in Southern Ireland since the 17 March ,we started our search in September last year from the uk.

Daft is the strongest sales site in our opinion there are others but they are normally a repeat of Daft,one idiosyncrasy that we found early on was that the marketing of farms / small holdings and houses are intermingled there appears to be no rime or reason ...you have to look at all parts of the site daily.

Secondly it is not unusual to be ignored if you e mail ...phoning is best, we tried to leave our details with Auctioneers’s so if anything came up they would contact us ..only to be told we should watch there we’d site !

Auctioneers’s are a jolly bunch we have on more than one occasion on asking for room sizes been told “we don’t normally do that” ,you may also have noticed the often severe lack of photos ..you just have to press.
Drive by everything as things are different on the ground when you get there.

One suggestion that was made to us was to ask the Mart Auctioneers’s as in every area they know what’s coming up....we didn’t so can’t tell you good or bad but it was suggested.

Hi there, thanks for the reply.  We've been in ireland since monday and we've had four viewings so far, we've found three that we'd like to look at next week.  I've put some wanted ads up and had a few bites but nothing concrete just yet.  We tried to get a pps number from the social in Killkenny, but they wouldn't give us one.  They wanted proof of address and of course, we don't have one.  They say that once we have an offer on a property accepted, then a letter to this effect from our solicitor should suffice. 
Most of the properties we've looked at so far have gone for over the asking price, we are considering renting for a bit to see if the market cools down a bit in the autumn, but we won't rent unless we can have our cats with us.  They are in a cattery and cost £700 a month, which we could spend on renting... trouble is no one wants pets!
