My ewe who Lambed twins a month ago has shouted all night. When I checked this am she wasn't letting lambs feed and her udder was very full and quite warm. She had plenty of milk. Held her and the lambs fed. Just checked now and she us reluctant to let the la.bs feed again. Her udder doesn't appear lumpy and us not as full as this am . not sure if it is mastitis or not. Can someone advise please. MY thanks

Probably the start of mastitis. Best get the vet to look if you’re not sure- they can give antibiotics and pain relief if so. Udder mint is great for soothing mastitis if that’s what the vet diagnoses.

Check her teats for dryness , cracks , if looks bad then apply cream in some form , udder mint etc and keep lambs off for a few hours then reapply and repeat . Mastitis ,the udder on one side gets hard and swollen  turning from warm to cold to the feel , ewe gets sick quickly and needs strong AB;s  and a painkiller

Please do not apply uddermint in the case of cracks or broken skin - it is extremely painful. Much better to use non-minty udder cream.


I am surprised at the "ewe shouting all night", if she has mastitis and is in pain she would more likely be quiet and withdrawn. Does she get any additional feed? How well is the grass coming on - here it is still very cold and not much new growth yet. I am feeding all my ewes - both recently lambed ones and the ones still due to lamb in the next couple of weeks.

ive just had one doing this and found today that she had been fly stuck all around middle of back once treated she a lot better but still not keen on one lamb
