Chick with infected/swollen eye
« on: April 26, 2021, 06:28:30 am »
Have a chick which got a shaving stuck in its eyes. We had to carefully remove the shaving but the eye then swelled up until it shut completely. It now can't open it and it is getting bigger each day with swelling. any tips appreciated thanks

Keep bathing the eye with warm water, several times a day if you can. How old is the chick? If it is a little one in a brooder then you will have to watch it to make sure it continues to eat and drink, as otherwise it may just sit in a corner feeling sorry for itself and ultimately starve. An older chick off heat should recover fairly swiftly.

Make black tea with no sugar and take the tea bag out. Cool it down (as obvious as it sounds, last time I suggested it to someone they were not sure). Rinse the eye with tea and put tea bag on it.

Tannins in tea have antibacterial properties. We used to do it for hamsters and kids back in the days  ;)
