Hi again,

My 2 piggies are doing really well, almost 20wks now and are booked to go on the 11th Jan, still loving their straw house, havent destroyed it yet. They now have 3 adjoining pens about 50m x 20m in total which in turn are being turned into mudpie as they power rotovate the ground for me.
 
Whilst taking them their feed a little while ago one of the pigs excitedly jumped up on a temporary corrugated gate/barrier & cut his leg, have made the gate safer for them now I realise they can reach that high.  Been out again with headtorch tried to have a look.  Its bleeding just above his trotter, looks like a graze but cant be sure.
He seems fine, ate his food no problem but not sure what to do - have no dry mud free area to take him to have a better look.
If it was my child or my dog I would clean the wound and cover it - what on earth do you do to a pig?

Have you got ant purple antiseptic spray? That's what I use on all the animals. If not, I use a bit of Sudocrem after cleaning a small wound.

I've never had this happen, but suggest saline solution (salt and warm water), pour it over wound.

Next, for speed, look it up on the internet, hopefully something will come up that you can do to help keep the wound clean.

Make sure his bed is clean and dry, try to keep him out of the mud, at least until it has had a time to dry out / scab over.

What is purple antiseptic spray, where can I source it, is it iodine?

You vet should have it, also your feed supplier. It's a form of iodine, purple in colour, sprays on easily. I suggest you pour saline solution over the wound to clean it out, then use the spray.

Too late tonight to buy it so use the saline until you can get out to the shops.

Sudocreme is good but is also a barrier cream so it won't let the air into the wound. Try the saline/spray first, then consider sudocreme (get that from the chemist) after saline solution, if necessary.

I just used ordinary antiseptic powder once, though I suppose that wouldn't do much good if everything's muddy...

Its soo dark out there cant see anything even with a torch & mud up to their ankles is making it difficult! will pop out later once he is in his bed & attempt to check again but he will just have to wait until daylight whilst eating a nice breakfast .
yeah the mud is going to be a problem as the cut/graze is just above his trotter.
Will pop into the village vets for purple spray when drop daughter off at school.

the purple spray is called allamycen , but would need to be applied several times a day if getting wet ,you also get silver spray ,your vet will advise whitch is best.

Alamycin is an antibiotic and inly available from the vet, The purple antiseptic spray is available from  Countrywide etc. Very useful stuff!

if your planning on selling the pork in the very near future then spraying wounds with an antibiotic may not be wise. the anti foot rot spray would be better. if its only a minor cut odds are that it will be fine.

We had a pig who got the wrong side of Hilary and who received a nasty bite.  Vet unavailable.  We cleaned (not easy because pig although traumatised also very wary) the wound then sprayed purple spray until it dripped.  Result when it went to abattoir there was not a sign of the wound, nor any scarring when meat came back.
