we are considering buying a piece of land for a small holding. There is no dwelling there at all, or any building. Is it possible to get planning permission to live in a caravan or log cabin.

Short answer, it's not easy or even possible most of the time.

Have a look at the info on the Chapter 7 website
Don't listen to the money men - they know the price of everything and the value of nothing

Live in a cohousing community with small farm for our own use.  Dairy cows (rearing their own calves for beef), pigs, sheep for meat and fleece, ducks and hens for eggs, veg and fruit growing
