Pickup insurance - am i a business?
« on: February 11, 2020, 07:36:42 pm »
Hi
wonder if any oen had thsi knowledge about me!!
No really,
I am starting a smallholding in my retirement and wanted to swap out my saloon car for pcikup that would serve more purposes, however the insurance quote asks me alternatives like "social leisure no commute etc" vs "business use'?
I dont intend to be a business but have i becoem one if i sell eggs from box in my front garden? Or take soem to a mate and accept a cash donation?
If i went to sell at a farmers market would that amke me a business?

I am on a pension and dont plan on working other than for my own enjoyment.

Would welcome any advcie
Thansk u

No you are amost certainly not a business - I ran my van for my smallholding  (not run as a business - my animals count as hobby for tax purposes) and don't have any business type van insurance, just leisure incl commute. It does work out a lot cheaper, but you do have to insist with some insurance companies. WE use NFU.

As you probably know or have gathered, I show my dogs.

Many of my friends go up and down the UK, and abroa, showing their dogs too.  Many of them have vans that they can sleep in as well as having crates for the dogs.  They don't pay business insurance rates - except a couple who are dog walkers as well.

So no, you're not a business

Just trudging through the renewal process now, categories that I would say could be applicable would be “social & domestic (from memory)” or “carriage of own goods” - suggest you put both options into an online comparison site & see which is cheaper (as long as that category suits).
Trailer cover actually reduced my quote??? Can’t make sense of these things sometimes
