I've seen some discussion on this elsewhere, but I can't make out whether the stag was poached or if he was culled.

My feeling is he was poached  :(
Anyone minding the land/herd would not (in my opinion only) take out the prime stag. And if it was culling - it wouldn't have made the news.

the news was that he was shot by someone who had a licence - so technically not poached. Thing was there had been an appeal to leave him be during rutting to allow him to pass on his genes! He def wasnt culled cos they were saying he was in his prime and certainly wasnt on the decline!

some people see something wonderful and just cant resist spoiling it.

The latest news is that he hasn't been killed. they have just tried to put hunters off the scent.

He is obviously being hunted for his head, then, as no stag at this time of year is worth eating. Their flesh is rank after a couple of weeks of rutting.

Eh !!! so they put out news that he has been killed.... which higlights his existance to far far more folk than would have known about him originally....then a few days later say it was false cos they were trying to put hunters off .....NOW everyone will know about him!!! and every plonker with a gun will be after him??????????  Thats nuts!!
