Which disinfectants?
« on: November 09, 2019, 03:36:53 pm »
Would just like to get a feel which disinfectants forum members use on their smallholdings. I've been cleaning my dogs and rabbits equipment with Virkon-S and Safe4 products. What other products would you guys n gals also recommend?

If it is just equipment for dogs, rabbits and poultry, I use hot soapy water. The only time I would use Virkon (which is expensive) is if a specific pathogen or high risk has been identified. So I use it to disinfect the trailer after a visit to the abattoir or, for the poultry, when there is a high risk of bird flu.

Ah! Lucky you  :) . It is a very good disinfectant, so you won't go far wrong.

I think Scarlet Dragon and I must have had a similar misspent youth. I also love the smell of Jeyes fluid :innocent:

If you need something more specialist then the Defra website shows lists of what should be used for specific disease control depending on the location. http://disinfectants.defra.gov.uk/DisinfectantsExternal/Default.aspx?Module=ApprovalsList_SI

Useful link [member=132794]Scarlet.Dragon[/member]:  certainly a very comprehensive list.

My own needs relate mostly to cutting-equipment disinfection and for that purpose I use isopropyl alchohol or Citrox or a good scrub with soap and water.  For surfaces, Citrox (available for dilution as Citrox or, in higher concentration, as Citrox P) is an alternative to nasty Jeyes for cleaning surfaces/greenhouses etc:  however, again, a good scrub of surfaces with soap and water should not be dismissed.   A dilution of Citrox is also good for "cleaning" plant cuttings and keeping static/circulated water supplies "clean".

And, as you might guess from the name Citrox, it is derived from citrus fruit (somehow or another) and may be used in "organic" systems.

Plus I've just come across an article about Citrox as a mouth-wash which I believe goes under the brand name of Curaprox !!!  Whether the mouthwash has exactly the same makeup as horticultural Citrox is beyond me:  to note the article refers to its 99.9998% microbial effectiveness.

Here's a link to that article if you're interested: https://www.dentalreview.news/dentistry/19-dental-health-hygiene/4116-new-and-natural-oral-healthcare-citrox

[member=132794]Scarlet.Dragon[/member]   I'm sure there are plenty of articles ont web about Jeyes - here's just one of them

Horti' Citrox is an Agralan product   https://www.agralan.co.uk/

Total Farm Disinfectant here which is Downland’s version of Fam30. Used for foot dips, trailer wash downs, and sheep/cattle housing/handling equipment cleaning.

Never heard of either of those (Downlands or Fam30). Shall have to have a look around at them.
