RIP Mr Handsome
« on: October 19, 2010, 10:11:39 am »
We inherited him and his brother when we moved here 2 years ago. I don't normally get attached to livestock but I really liked this old boy. Unfortunatley he was going downhill. Very gurgly when breathing and then started to do this weird thing with his head, stretching his neck and pushing his head to one side. He was still eating but skinny as a rake. He was wormed and given antibiotics.

Basically I didn't want to find him on his side gasping for breath so I pulled his neck last night. Poor guy.

Was he just old?

Oh! Bless him, he looks lovely, a fluffy version of ours.

If you inherited him two years ago, he could be any age but sounds like he had some sort of respiratory problem.  Perhaps he was too old to fight it off, regardless of the treatments you'd given him.  Also we had a cockerel who went blind in one eye.  He used to do odd things like stretching his head to one side to see properly so perhaps his eye sight was going too. Could be another sign of his advanced age. At least you didn't let him suffer.

Mr Handsome indeed, he was a smart looking fellow!

It's always sad when it's time to say goodbye, but I'm sure he had a happy time while he was with you.

I know how you feel - very brave of you being able to put him down - I would have been off to the vets AGAIN!!!! We lost Poppy (he was 3 weeks old when we got Poppy and Penny - he was supposed to be a she!!!) 2 saturdays again - I thought he was getting a bit slow and he passed away in his sleep - nine and a half years old though so I think he did pretty good - he's a pic of him in his prime at eight!!
