If you want to breed from them then it will be worth finding out their history as I mentioned before. Also ask the vendor to PD the cow that's been running with the bull- if she's empty and has been running for a significant time with him then I'd not be buying her for breeding. Likewise if the others have had a lot of time off breeding it wouldn't be advisable to buy for breeding simply due to their age.


AI can be useful but difficult to detect heat sometimes. I know farmers that have used AI in sucklers and gone back to a bull. We AI'd some heifers a few years ago and I think all were successful but they were housed and it's easier to see them bulling when they are close by. It would be worth trying though... or look for some Dexters that are scanned in calf and then you've not got to worry about getting them pregnant as soon as they come home.
