Night sweating
« on: October 11, 2010, 11:01:05 pm »
For the last few nights my horse on his late night check has been sweating really badly on his tummy and chest, none on face, neck or ears,by morning all dry.He is out all day and coming in around 7 small feed of high fibre cubes and hi fi light, then a net of haylage, swaped the haylage for hay with no difference still sweaty, had vet today who said it was the grass as he had seen alot of cases of colic in the last week and keep him in a couple of days then restrict grazing he also gave me some anti inflammatory powder to give twice a day,so he has been in all day and still on just checking sweating again.

Any ideas its driving me mad.

I have seen this before with one of ours. We had a horse that preferred living out. She would come in for a feed willingly, but half an hour later would want to go back out and get stressed and start sweating and get tucked up. She would calm down eventually and get back to normal. The problem was all the others came in without any problems and she didn't like being out alone. She was alright after a couple of weeks when she got used to the new routine.

I agree, it most probably is due to change of routine. Also concider that the horses are growing their winter coats, and it has been very mild of late!
how old is the horse?

He is 15.the thing that puzzles me is that he was out all day with no sweating and in all day yesterday and no sweating only seems to happen at night.

thing is if he is in a stable and it is a warm night it could get quite muggy , therefore sweaty!
Is his coat growing in thicker than normal. i have heard that loads of horses seem to be preparing themselves for a hard winter! Mine are too!!

If he apears to be relatively comfortable other than the sweatiness, i would persevere, but cut all feed right out and stick to the hay! Is he drin king normally?

Don't know what's causing it, but at my age, I have a lot of sympathy for your horse  ;D

once they finish the vet powders it is well worth putting a dose of NAF pink powder in every feed. Unlike most supplements it isnt expensive cos you use a tiny tiny bit and even my fussy colic prone older chap eats it without noticing. It is very very good at keeping the tummy working well, royal vet college (my old vets as we lived near them before moving to Scotland) recommended he stay on it for life. Lots of other peeps I know use it, once on the regular dose after a few weeks you only use about a dessert spoon full.

Well today he was sweating this morning so to me it cant be the grass as hes been off it 2 days now,i phoned the vet again this morning and he was suppost to call me back and never did even after a second call,a friend of mine thought it could be an ulcer.

I have been away so havent been able to reply!
How is he doing now?

If you have eliminated environmental heat, and excess feed, stress/excercise...then the only thing left in a healthy horse that could cause sweating is pain. So then what could be causing pain.?????

Check feet for abcesses, teeth, etc etc. But get hold of that vet! it could be colicyness or as was suggested an ulcer..

..whats his dung like; if its loose and sloppy, or worse scouring - has he been wormed recently? has he had access to poinsenous plants eg yew, or could he have picked up a gastrointestinal infection? If its hard, then back to colic!

Only a few ideas?
Best bet is to be assertive with the vet - if you havent already ;)

Aaaaaah- sometimes horses can get a sore belly after worming. If I am not mistaken it can be due to dead worms etc in the belly/bowel. i think also some can be quite sensitive to the worming product itself

My Highland has been doing this too, he is too hot in the stable as it's quite sheltered (in a barn). I clipped him and he's better. He has to come in as it's the regime at the livery where I am at the moment. May be worth considering? Hope he's better anyway  :-\

Dont think hes hot as he had been in for a good few weeks at night before this happened, got first set of blood results back today and they are on the high end of normal, got to wait until next week for the other tests they are running.
