Mending split wellingtons?
« on: September 08, 2018, 09:11:11 pm »
I have a pair of Bekina Steplite wellingtons which I have been practically living in for the last 14 months - including during the drought as they are so comfortable and easy to slip in and out of.

This week they have developed a split round the heel - presumably due to flexing?

I am wondering if I can get a bit more life out of them rather than fork out £45 on another pair.

Has anyone successfully used any of the products that seem to be around for sealing such splits - or found another way to waterproof them?

Thanks for any ideas

When my mum chopped off the toe of her wellie with the lawn mower  :o  she repaired it with a bicycle inner tube repair kit.  They lasted for years afterwards.  I don't suppose that would work with a split though.

I've successfully repaired a hole in my wellies using "shoegoo" adhesive. It does also work for splits, but TBH the repairs don't last long on any area where the cause of failure was stress or flexing.

Thank you for your thoughts.

I have bought this: Stormsure S1B Outdoor Adhesive Waterproof

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003V71R6A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

thinking that at £5 I did not have much to lose.  I will try to remember to report on its effectiveness.

Did it work, Grib? I have a leaky wellington that I'd like to repair if possible...

Bicycle puncture repair kit is another good idea!

I an fact had two pairs that needed mending:

(1) Split in heel caused by flexing - the adhesive I bought lasted about an hour before the split opened up again

(2) A rip in the side where a screw on the side of a spade had slashed into it - on this one the mend is still intact but I have not used this pair much since fixing it.
