Getting rams up to spec for tupping time
« on: September 17, 2010, 10:19:08 am »
Hi Ya

I have just bought 3 lleyn rams for this year, the last owner has been conditioning them upto spec for the last six weeks by feeding sugar beet pellets and licks etc

I am not putting them in for another week or so and so I want to keep them up at their current condition.

Can anyone recommend what I could be feeding them, should I just continue with beet pellets or are there some other kind of nice munchies I could be providing them with to get them ready for the shag fest on the horizon :0)

Don't know about feeding but make sure their feet are spot on and apparently you should remove wool from the sac - coolness encourages healthy sperm.

Thanks Rosemary, one has a very 'furry' set of sacs.  Another lovely job to do ;)

I have looked again and I dont think they are over furry - thank god!!  I wouldnt fancy an itchy sac after a trim. Its bad enough with stuble rash on the face without being, well down there...

I have bought them some 'coarse mix' for showing rams - it looks a little like the goats mix actually.

Yet another food to get confused over in the feed shed when I have forgot the torch in the evening!!

The new boys are loving it at the moment, even after just two days I have got them coming to the bucket for food.  I hope they feel at home here, they have food and a good view and even though they have a different 'family' now they seem to be settling in.  Bless them.
