animal fat??
« on: February 21, 2011, 11:20:21 am »
I have a quite a bit of surplus pork fat from rendering - is it a good idea to feed it to the birds as I won't have any other use for it? I would give it bit by bit with other feed, veg scraps, etc. :chook: :&>

as I'm not selling to the public my main concern is if it's ok for the birds. They eat mice and worms after all which are not even cooked  :&>

Not sure but I think you are breaking the rules here, I did cook and dry some off for my dogs as chews but feeding to hens I have a feeling is a no no.

do you mean fat like you'd find in thge bottome of the grill pan after cookingf bacon?
Of so why not mix corn into it and pour it into plastic tubs to make cakes. Then hang one up now and again for the birds to peck at

it would be plain pork fat I have slow-heated in a pan to render the lard, it came from a unsmoked and unsalted piece of pork. Good idea, shrekfeet! I know the blackbirds go for anything meaty  :&>

Well I wouldn't tell AH or TS I was doing that, if I were.

Rendered porkfat (Schmalz in German) is actually really nice for humans (and still legal I think?), on fresh bread. Also fantastic to slowcook red or white cabbage in, using loads of red/white wine, vinegar, sugar and spices. Traditional Xmas dinner food that is! In Germany it was traditionally used for anything that needed frying.

I use the rendered fat from my mutton for wild bird feeders, and also to make soap.

as they will eat anything including decomposing bodies im sure they will love it maybe mince it and mix it with a bit of corn. wether its legal i don't know but just feed it to the wild birds near your chickens. but not saying anything would be wise.
