I live in the Peak District of Derbyshire.  The house is a typical limestone construction with lots of outbuildings in various stages of decay.  We have 5 fields of permanent pasture (approx 7-8 acres) which we rent to a local farmer for sheep+lambs and around 12-15 heifers.  We keep a small flock of laying hens, some bought as POL 2-3 years ago and some are ex-batts acquired about the same time.  Having retired, in theory at least, I am keen to use a small part of one of the fields as a sort of allotment, this causes no problems as far as our farmer is concerned.  Before he comes to turn this area over for us, we will need to put in some sort of fencing to deter his animals when they go on the land for the summer.

Looking forward to gleaning help with this and other queries.

Sue

Welcome from Wales

We are so called retired as well - never been so busy ;D ;D

Should think you will need to put some posts and stock fencing plus at least a solid rail 4' of the ground or some barb wire (hate this stuff) to keep the sheep and cattle out of your vegie patch.

You can't beat home grown veggies  :yum: :yum:

welcome, you might be better to wait until he ploughs it before fencing it, will make turning easier for him.

Hello and welcome - from the Peak District too!!

Just wondering where you got your ex batts from, as I used to be a co ordinator/distributor point for this area - so its possible we have met!!
Hope you are able to get your allotment up and running ok - a couple of people near us have been stopped from having an allotment in the field, as they needed planning permission, and one was just at the side of his house!!!  Although where I lived before I grew veg, but it was hidden behind the goat shed .......

Thanks for all the greetings!  Nice to 'meet' you all.

Thanks for the suggestion re fencing, Dyedinthewool, I'll have to trek over to Leigh's in Buxton and get something sorted, otherwise my farmer will be here (he did say leave it until March!).  Can't wait to get picking my veg in the summer.  Roxy, my hens came from North London Hen Rescue (now Henrehomers) and a friend collected them for me, along with his, from Hellaby.  Hope the Peak Park doesn't try interfering with my vegetable plot!!
