Hello Everyone!
« on: July 16, 2010, 03:37:15 pm »
Hi all, after reading through TAS for several months,  thought it was about time I got involved. :cow:

This is my first year growing veg, and i have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and have been surprised at how easy it has been, we have got so many courgettes I have been giving them away at work!...

anyhoo, just wanted to say a big hello to all from me in Caversham, Reading.

One thing I wanted to ask, does anyone know of any small holding associations in the south east and in particular around Berkshire?

I have had a dream of owning a small holding for some time, but I know it is something that I will not be able to afford for a very long time, if at all sadly, but would very much like to get involved and at least have some experience with animals.

The word smallholding can mean anything.  it is a state of mind rather than how much land you have!  Some people have only a garden and keep bees/veges/fruit/chickens maybe, others have larger areas of land and have pigs/sheep/cattle.  It's what you want to make of it really. I think everyone always wants/needs more land! :o Hope you enjoy the forum, great fun, loads of info, and help.

Hi

I used to work in Wokingham (but mostly London!!) and lived in Basingstoke but have now moved to a smallholding in West Cornwall.

If you have no luck on the smallholding association front, have you considered volunteering for the gardening charity Thrive - the Trunkwell Garden Project is at Beech Hill, near Reading.

The organic farm, Waltham Place, over near White Waltham might also have some contacts.

Good luck
Sue

Hello from North Yorkshire.  I too started to grow veg for the first time this year and am grateful for all the sunshine we've had.  Things are looking good, especially my courgettes too!  Don't seem to be having much luck with the sweetcorn though.  The growing seems to have come to a halt for some reason.

Good news about your corn.  Mine's a bit behind that stage and still quite small.  I'll keep my fingers crossed anyway.
