A neep is a tumshie. When i was a boy we used to put six inch nails on the railway track the trains flattened them into a useful knife which we used to cut our tumshie into bite size pieces. In those days most farmers had a tumshie field.

Hunt the gowk or hunty gowk never herd it used for a tumshie. But I can see where it would come from, gowk being an idiot and as thick as a tumshie.

It's a neep in Scotland, a swede in England and a turnip in Cornwall. Hope this helps ;D

Ah, but when is a turnip a swede?  :D    :stir:  ;) :eyelashes: :innocent:
Don't listen to the money men - they know the price of everything and the value of nothing

Live in a cohousing community with small farm for our own use.  Dairy cows (rearing their own calves for beef), pigs, sheep for meat and fleece, ducks and hens for eggs, veg and fruit growing

The vegetable Dan calls a swede, I call a turnip or neep. What he calls a turnip, I call a white turnip.

Turnip or neep may be used as a derogatory term for someone with low intelligence.

Some of you may recall a Sun headline (I think) following an international foorball defeat os England by Sweden which was along the lines of "Swedes 3; Turnips Nil".  ;D
