December
Temperature: Slightly below average
Precipitation: Slightly above average

The first half of the month looks set to bring unsettled and often rather chilly weather, although some milder interludes are likely. Colder conditions are likely to be more persistent in northern areas where snow is likely at times, especially over higher ground. Even in the south some wintry weather is possible, but wet, windy and milder conditions are likely to be more common. Overnight frost is likely at times, but mostly in northern regions.

The second half of the month is expected to bring quiet conditions for a time as high pressure extends its influence across the UK. Temperatures may remain on the low side at first with a risk of overnight frost developing quite widely. Possibly becoming significantly milder for a time, especially in northern and western areas where further spells of rain likely. Towards the end of the month much colder weather may develop bringing an increasing of sleet or snow to much of the country.

January
Temperature: Close to average
Precipitation: Above average

The first third of the month is expected to bring a spell of cold weather with sharp overnight frosts and a risk of snowfall. Snow is most likely in the north and east but may affect other regions too. Later in the period the risk of snow is expected to decrease, but there is likely to be an ongoing frost risk before milder conditions return from the west.

The middle third of the month may see unsettled and milder weather develop. Possibly turning very wet and windy for a time.

The final third of the month is expected to bring more unsettled weather with close to average temperatures. Towards the end of the month the weather is expected to quieten down again, bringing the possibility of some overnight frost.

February
Temperature: Slightly below average
Precipitation: Close to or slightly below average

The first half of the month is expected to bring mixed conditions with milder than average temperatures at times and some rain to all areas. Drier spells with some frost are also likely. Towards the middle of the month there is likely to be an increasing risk of sleet or snow affecting northern and eastern regions.

The second half of the month may be generally on the cold side with a significant risk of widespread snowfall at times. Potentially heavy snowfall could develop as mild and moist air meets cold continental air over the UK. A greater than average frost risk is also expected.
