Does anyone elses cat do this?
« on: January 25, 2012, 04:49:52 pm »

If Toby spies a fly or a spider ( or has one brought to his attention by me) he makes a little " Yaw-yaw-yah" sound which is somewhere between a mew and a ninja war cry and then he opens and closes his mouth a few times as if he is imagining himself chewing on something unpleasant. ???

Its actually one of the more endeering of his perculiar habits so I'm not complaining but I just wondered if other cats do this or wether its exclusive to my little feline friend. :cat:

Buffy my cat does it too but its usually when she spies a bird.  Her teeth almost seem to chatter when she gets excited.

its a cat thing!
If they can't reach the fly/bird/innocent passerby, then they do a frustrated kind of "jaws of death" bite that sounds like their teeth chattering... like they are pretending they are killing it

(If I remember correctly, I read it in Desmond Moriss "cat watching")

Mine all do it too and always have done.  Start getting concerned when they do the weirder things mine do like sucking their own teats.  My middle cat - Venus - does this.  My youngest - Gaia - sucks on every blanket she sees - endearing but have to watch them all very regularly - yuck!

Actually only Toby does it.

Polly just narrows her eyes and looks fixated by whatever it is, so I think there may be two types of cat,

those who just get out there, catch things and kill them (Polly)

and those who mew about what they would do if they did catch something (Toby)

Bless,

Yes, my old girls used to 'cackle' at the birds. You could see the evil thoughts in their eyes  ;D
