Before the poor little things are even born people are asking me how much for a half or whole Kune, butchered. As I don't know what, even approximately, what they will weigh I'm stuck for an answer.
How much per lb/kilo would you charge?

Okay, here goes

My 6 month old KK's are weighing 'roughly' 50Kg liveweight (measured by the student vets, using a piece of string and the calculation method) Based on 1lb of hard feed plus fruit and veg per day it's probably cost me about £100 to feed them to 70 - 80Kg or 8-10 months old (add an extra £10- £20 for straw)
So £110 gives you 80Kg liveweight (for me, your costs might be different - but for calculations sake I'll do it this way)
80Kg liveweight = 56Kg dead weight = 45Kg meat (by the time you take out bones, trotters etc)
Slaughter costs me £20, butchery @ 80p per kilo deadweight = £64
So (based on 80Kg liveweight) it costs £174 to produce 45Kg of meat, makes your production cost £3.86 per kilo. Obviously this is just a rough calculation based on some assumptions

Thanks for replies. I have unlimited supplies of fruit and veg plus supplies of free organic oats, muesli etc so they don't cost much to feed. I'll go with Happy Hippies costs and, hopefully, we'll all be happy.

Each HM, but lack of sleep and too many things in my head means I was actually a bit out on the calculations - forgetting prices per bag of feed this is how the numbers stack up. Assuming you've bred the pigs you're raising (so no purchase cost) and not counting fruit, veg & straw.

Kune Kune eating 1lb of feed per day up to 10 months age - 300lbs/136Kg (gives a liveweight around 80Kg)
'Big' pig eating 1lb for each month of age up to 6 months - 450lbs/204Kg (gives a liveweight around 80Kg)
Obviously you need a bigger bit of ground so the KK's are able to graze effectively and I always give them more fruit & veg than my 'big' pigs cos I feel sorry for the little guys

but they cost less to raise to the same size and weight as other breeds @ 6 months.
Does that make any more sense ? Apologies if not, my brain has drowned in the rain today ! (that's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it
