Forth Valley Orchards’ Day

If you don’t know your pippins from your russets, then the activities on offer at the fun-packed second annual Forth Valley Orchards’ Day will help you to find out!

People across Forth Valley are being encouraged to join Forth Environment Link and the Forth Valley Orchards’ Group in a day to celebrate and learn about Forth Valley’s orchards in a full programme of activities for all the family.

Among the free activities will be an orchard advice clinic, where queries about your fruit can be answered by expert Andrew Lear, the ‘Appletreeman’.  Andrew will be on-hand to identify any mystery varieties that you might have growing.

Visitors are also being encouraged to bring along any apples for juice tasting.

You will have an opportunity to learn how to crush the apples and then press them for juice.

Children will also have lots to do through activities run by well-known orchard enthusiast, environmental education expert, and former head teacher, Margaret Miller, for a variety of hands-on and fun activities.

There will also be a display of the history of Forth Valley’s orchards, and interactive map of where the orchards and fruit trees are that you can add to.

You can also sign up to training and workshop events to run throughout the autumn and winter, and pick up information about the Central Scotland Green Network Orchard Grant Scheme for creating and managing orchards.

Other organisations with an interest in orchards will also be in attendance to offer support and information for anyone wanting to create or manage orchards.  John Hancox of Scottish Orchards will bring along his apple display, apple parer, and provide orchard care advice, and a pruning demonstration.
