Constructed wetland systems: a biodiverse alternative to conventional reedbed systems

Add to:

Since 1993, Jay’s design company Biologic Design has created constructed wetland ecosystems which provide low energy “Ecosystem Services” The Wetland Ecosystem Treatment ( WET ) Systems, created by Biologic Design, are soil-based, multi-species integrated systems which provide a diverse range of clients with wastewater purification coupled with habitat creation and resource production. The workshop will involve a detailed look at the planting for a WET System, as well as a chance to walk around two established WET Systems in Herefordshire. A WET System uses native willow, marginals and water plants to create biodiverse habitats, rich in amphibians, insects, birdlife and colour. The multiple benefits of a WET System over Reedbed Treatment Systems as well as conventional electro-mechanical, machine-based, wastewater treatment systems will be considered in the context of increasing energy costs and climate change
