Growing Globe Artichokes
« on: April 20, 2009, 12:36:46 pm »
Hi, can anyone point me in the direction of some good info about growing these artichokes or offer some info here, it would be much appreciated.

I tried growing some last year, hoping to be able to start harvesting some this year, but had to move house in November and start again. So far, this is what I've done:

Sown seeds in a coldframe
Coldframe had to get moved to make way for greenhouse, so I had to move all the seedlings!  ::)
I transferred most to pots in the new greenhouse
Transferred several several to a raised bed
Transferred about a dozen more to a square foot wooden planter
Now, the seedlings are about 10cm high and are growing second set of leaves.

I know these need around 2' square of space each and will take until next year before they are ready for flowering/fruiting whatever, but I can't find any information about how they actually grow and how to cultivate them to produce good crops. Can anyone enlighten me, as artichoke growing is just one of these 'things' that I got into my head that I wanted to try.  :yum: (Mainly because they cost so much to buy and I can't warrant the expense.)

All help, suggestions, hints, tips appreciated, thanks  :)
Trying to control my chicken habit after falling off the wagon.
