Ram lamb ball bag full of something?
« on: March 22, 2013, 01:55:13 pm »
Hi All, I hope the weather isnt bad for all of you out there....
Ive come across something that ive not seen before, my last twins born two days ago from a large romney ewe, the ram lamb has his scrotum full of something? I went to put his ring on and first of all it looked like it had one large testicle, when i felt it, it was full of something squissy? maybe a prolaps ? I obviously didnt put a ring on him, has anyone else experianced this please? your comments will be very well recieved
thank you

Definitely do not castrate him - likely to be a small bit of intestine and if you put a rubber on him you will kill him.  I had a ram lamb like this some years ago.

thought it could be that, so better just to leave him and send him off entire when the time is right?

I'm only a human doctor not a vet but it sounds suspiciously like a congenital scrotal  hernia. I searched "lamb, hernia, scrotum" on google and certainly such a thing is not unheard of and a piece in the Journal of Veterinary Science quotes:

"Inguinal hernia is relatively common in bulls, rams and boars. Scrotal hernia is merely an extension of an inguinal hernia"

But this was a study carried out in Saudi where breeds are very different.

Personally I would call the vet and chat on the phone.

I get one or maybe two (in 500-ish lambs) every so often - not every year, but maybe most years.  They seem to thrive but yes, don't put a ring on him, and of course get him away before he becomes sexually active ;)
Don't listen to the money men - they know the price of everything and the value of nothing

Live in a cohousing community with small farm for our own use.  Dairy cows (rearing their own calves for beef), pigs, sheep for meat and fleece, ducks and hens for eggs, veg and fruit growing
