Close to lambing?
« on: January 20, 2015, 03:12:51 pm »
Hi everyone!

I am new here and this is my first year lambing.

I have this girl who was pregnant when we got her so we don't have any dates on her, but I'm thinking she is close to lambing.

-her hips are looking a bit more hollow
-she is pretty tired (but still eating)
-her udder is starting to develop a bit
-we can see the lamb dancing around in her belly!
-she is huge!
-I check her vulva and it seems pink and kind of loose

What other signs should I watch for?  I'm nervous and want to try and be there for her first lamb.

Their hips usually look quite hollow when they are about to lamb, rather than a while before. If she is just starting to bag up (her udder) she could be a while off yet, when it gets a lot bigger and looks very full, she'll be close.
Hope this helps!

She may be restless, not be interested in feed, paw the ground, go and find a quiet corner, maybe under a hayrack if she's in the shed.  Watch for the waterbag (don't always see it and it doesn't always appear before the lamb).  She may squat but not urinate, or lie down and extend a front leg, push hard, then get up again.  All these mean lambing is imminent.  If no lamb has appeared within 20 minutes of either of the last two I'd call on a more experienced shepherd to investigate in case the lambs are poorly presented or tangled up or she could have ringwomb.
